This summer, just a week after the PKRA in Germany, my girlfriend and I went on a road trip to Sweden.
To fit all our stuff into my car (Seat Marbella) I had to build a roof rack myself ’cause there is no shop left selling them for such an old model. After two days of sudatory work i had my own solid rack and a good friend, Lasse, was so kind to lent us his roof box for the next two weeks. Having packed everything we were ready to leave on a grey and rainy Monday morning. Heading up Denmark we spend our first night on some camping place in the middle of nowhere which however happened to be the most awesome caravan park ever. Cheap but really luxury, with massive showers, kitchen, pool and everything one could possibly ask for.
The next day we went further up North for a little session in ‘Hanstholm’. The spot is located right next to a fish meal factory which also was the reason for a lovely smell of rotten fish.
The wind came in a little gusty, but the waves were nice an clean and besides a few massive rocks hiding in the water the spot is really good and I had quite a great time out there. By the end of the day we had to travel to the western side of Denmark’s North coast to take the ferry over to Sweden. The departure wasn’t until 2am so on the way we made another stop close to ‘Hirtshals’. Frothing over the perfectly seeming conditions, being allowed to park your car on the huge beach, flat water??? and hardly anybody out, I had to go for a second session only realizing that the wind came in gustier than I had ever experienced, from being powered to my kite juts dropping down.
A little annoyed we drove off to Frederikshavn, waiting for our ferry. The next morning we arrived in Gothenborg, being way too tired to do any sightseeing so we drove a bit further North to a huge lake, called Vännern. There we slept a while enjoying the sun and decided to stay the next couple days around that area. Having seen some man-made waterfall, visiting a castle, sleeping in a non-waterproof tent during a thunderstorm and vainly hoping for wind we decided to drive to the South of Sweden, to visit a few mates.
First we stopped at Fillip’s place in Trelleborg where we experienced the Swedish way of partying – I ended up vomiting on the driveway of the chick who was having the party… Luckily the next day was a perfect Sunday, rain all day, sitting on the couch, watching telly and ordering pizza. Recovered from our night out we left the next day checking some spots, ending up in Lommo where I thought my gf how to kite surf.
We camped at the nearby camping spot. The next morning after checking the wind (there wasn’t any) we decided to take it slowly and slept in for a bit before we started off our way to visit Mike the knife Blomvall, who invited us to come by when we would come to sweden. We stayed for two days and really had a lot of fun. My gf got hooked with kiting finally and me and mike had a great flat water session for about 5 hour at sick spot close to Helsingborg. Before we left to stay one further night at a the place of one of my perth buddies in Malmö. Biggi, Frida, Mike and I went for sick gymnastic session in a local gym. They had like trampolines everywhere and you could really try out a lot of stuff. After leaving Mike and his girlfriend Frida I was really looking forward to meet one of my friends from Australia again. His name is Per, he actually is swedish and he ones lost almost one entire thumb to kiteboarding check his youtube video further up in the text.
